The transfer of a large number of very small files to a hard disk, crashes while the remaining space is much greater than the overall size of your files. What’s going on? Be aware that any storage media (HDD, SSD, memory card, USB …) is divided into regions (clusters in English), whose size is identical for all clusters, depends on the type and the media size. Or a cluster can be associated with only a single file. In other words, even if a file occupies only a small part of a cluster,it is entirely devoted.
How to copy many small files
So if you have clusters of 4 KB (4096 bytes), a file of a size slightly larger than, for example 4100 bytes, will not fit in a single cluster. It thus occupy two … and monopolize and 8192 bytes on the disk, or nearly 50% of wasted space. With large files, the loss is negligible, but it is sensitive when the files occupy only two or three clusters, more so if these files are many.
As the cluster size is probably not the same between a USB and a hard disk, which was the key can not possibly be housed on the hard disk. The solution is simple: group systematically several small files into one. The proportion of wasted space will be reduced, as we have seen above. For the cluster size of any storage space, log in command line by typing cmd in the Start menu, then type chkdsk e: (replace e: with the letter of your storage unit). The result is displayed (XXXX bytes in each allocation unit).
